- February 28, 2016 – VTDigger Publishes a 24 Page Story Built on Rejected Allegations
VTDigger published “This Never Ends for Him,” a 24-page investigative feature by Elizabeth Hewitt examining my family’s custody case and repeating years of child sexual abuse allegations that had already been investigated and rejected by multiple law enforcement agencies, child protection authorities, prosecutors, and the Vermont family court.
By the time the article was published, those investigations were over, no criminal charges had been filed, the allegations had not been substantiated, and the family court had repeatedly concluded that my relationship with my son had been destroyed by false allegations of abuse. Despite that record, the article devoted most of its length to recounting the allegations, interviews, and expert opinions before presenting the court’s findings near the end.
The article remains one of the most damaging media accounts ever published about me and shows how false allegations can continue to shape public perception even after the institutions responsible for investigating them have rejected them.
I later brought a civil lawsuit that included claims against VTDigger arising from the publication of this article. Although those claims were ultimately unsuccessful, the article was later removed from VTDigger’s website without any public correction or explanation.
