In June 2018, the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Psychologists publicly disciplined psychologist Ricky Greenwald, Psy.D., following an ethics investigation into his professional conduct in a child custody matter. The Board resolved the case through a Consent Agreement requiring Greenwald to serve a minimum three-year probationary period under strict conditions rather than proceed to a formal disciplinary hearing.
Under the Consent Agreement, Greenwald acknowledged that, if the matter proceeded to a hearing, the Board could find that his conduct violated multiple provisions of the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. The alleged violations included multiple relationships, conflicts of interest, inadequate bases for professional opinions, improper interpretation of assessment results, and failure to appropriately manage conflicting professional roles. These findings arose from his professional involvement in an ongoing child custody dispute.
The disciplinary order imposed significant practice restrictions. Greenwald was required to practice under the weekly supervision of a Board-approved psychologist with expertise in family systems and high-conflict custody matters, complete additional continuing education, submit quarterly reports to the Board, and remain on probation for at least three years before becoming eligible to petition for its termination.
